Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 packet active dry yeast 2 1/4 tsp
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 egg for egg wash, optional

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir in the yeast and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Make the dough: In a stand mixer bowl, combine flour, eggs, and the yeast mixture. Add butter, vanilla, and salt, and mix until the dough comes together. Knead on medium speed for 10-12 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • First rise: Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Shape the dough: Punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then braid the ropes together. Pinch the ends to seal.
  • Second rise: Place the braided dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover it and let it rise for another 45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the brioche: Brush the dough with a beaten egg for a golden finish. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the brioche is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool and enjoy: Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
